Good news all cheese lovers

Those of us, who have to take statins and watch our cholesterol levels, may have previously been advised to keep an eye on our intake of saturated fats. I have always favoured using butter rather than spreads believing it to be healthier. That, however, is a different topic for another time.

Recent studies reinforced the latest research from various countries suggesting that saturated fat found in cheese does not increase blood cholesterol levels because of the unique set of nutrients it contains. The study identified that those who consumed high amounts of cheese consumed a significantly higher intake of saturated fat than those not eating cheese yet there was no difference in their LDL cholesterol levels, confirmed the lead author of the study, Dr Emma Feeney.

The study shows that cheese is definitely better for us than previously believed. Research from University College Dublin has concluded that people who eat high amounts of cheese are actually thinner than those who don’t, and cholesterol isn’t rising either.

Scientists studied the impact of eating dairy products such as milk, yogurt, cheese, cream and butter on 1,590 people aged between 18 and 90. They found that the people who consumed the most dairy products had the worst BMI, lower body fat percentages, smaller waists and lower blood pressure.

If we think in addition to this, that fat is excellent for the brain, unlike sugar, then it is doubly good news for us.

The study also illustrated those eating low-fat dairy tended to have higher cholesterol levels.

The study does conclude the need not only to consider the nutrients of the foods consumed but the overall dietary pattern, that means the pattern of other foods we eat with it.

I’m not saying everyone should go out and eat as much saturated fat as possible, please don’t think that I’m purely relaying findings of studies and sticking to my full-fat milk, cheese yogurt etc. Every time my body tells me it fancies anyone of those things, it is a cheese sandwich at lunchtime with a cup of tea.

I do enjoy cheese, we had baked Brie as a starter yesterday, and I don’t mind admitting it.
